Describe how Clementine's changing hair colors signify the different stages of her relationship with Joel. In addition, it is also clever device that Charlie Kaufman and Michel Gondry utilize to help the viewer keep the story straight. Chronologically, when Joel and Clementine meet for the first time in Montauk, her hair is green, which often alludes to something new and naive. Then, her hair is orange which is the root of her nickname, 'Tangerine' , which could represent the fact that the fire between them is dying out, but it also is the phase of their relationship when Joel and Clementine really become vulnerable with each other.
